FEATURES
The 1965 vintage for Burgundy was generally challenging, blighted by bad weather, with very few wines expected to still be drinking well today. However, the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 1965 stands out as an exception, with one expert describing it as an "amazing symphony of flavors" that was seamless and fine, showing hardly any signs of being tired even at nearly 50 years old. Another tasting note from 2010, for bottles reconditioned at the Domaine, described a completely bricked but not browning appearance, with a remarkably fresh nose of caramel, brown sugar, spice, tea, and soy notes. The palate was rich and round, completely resolved and utterly delicious, though the finish was leaning out. It was considered one of the stars of an otherwise indifferent vintage. Romanée-Saint-Vivant is known for its flirtatious nature, combining elegance akin to Romanée-Conti with a more robust character, featuring a refined bouquet of red fruit and floral notes, and a palate balancing acidity and tannin. These red Grands Crus from Romanée-Saint-Vivant often develop tertiary aromas of truffle, underbrush, leather, and fur with age. 【One of the stars of an otherwise indifferent vintage】.
Given its age, this wine requires careful handling. The cork may be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar device is recommended. Decanting is advisable to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but be gentle and monitor its evolution closely, as very old wines can fade quickly once exposed to air. Serve at 15-16°C (59-61°F).
Food pairing suggestions include strong-flavoured meats such as furred or feathered game (braised, in sauce, or grilled), wild-fowl like Peking duck, or a nice cut of roast veal. It also pairs well with duck, goose, and other game birds.
This extremely rare and historic wine is perfect for a momentous anniversary, a significant milestone celebration, or a private tasting among serious collectors. It's an experience to be savored, reflecting a unique chapter in Burgundy's winemaking history.
