FEATURES
The 2001 vintage for Des Comtes Lafon's Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1er Cru was marked by August hail, which resulted in a small crop of very ripe grapes. Dominique Lafon noted that he opted for riper picking and more extraction in 2001 compared to his current practices. Following the hail, Lafon invested in a vibrating sorting table, a measure that proved beneficial in eliminating ladybugs in 2004. This wine is praised for its lovely depth and sound framing acidity, with the fruit element holding up nicely over time. Domaine des Comtes Lafon is highly esteemed, with Dominique Lafon recognized for being "on fire, in a zone, on top of his game". Tasting notes describe a good medium red color with hints of amber at the rim. The nose offers musky, fully ripe aromas and flavors of redcurrant, chocolate, and earth, complemented by a whiff of cedar. Deeper, riper notes of plum, cherry, and licorice, with nuances of rose petal and leather, contribute to its pure and nuanced character. On the palate, it is fat, sweet, and rich, with well-integrated acidity and a solid underlying structure. The finish is characterized by fine-grained dusty tannins and lingering sweetness. Some also detect candied black cherries on the nose, leading to a light to medium-bodied wine with gorgeous purity of fruit, excellent depth, and a silky-textured core of cherries.
