FEATURES
The 2023 Trapet Pere & Fils Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a historic and highly respected Burgundy estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, with winemaking roots dating back to 1859. Domaine Trapet is a pioneer of biodynamics, having adopted the practice since 1995 and holding Demeter certification. The Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard is often referred to as the "King of Burgundies" and was reportedly Napoleon's favorite wine. Trapet is the second-largest owner in Chambertin, with 1.9 hectares, and some of their vines were planted as early as 1919. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was characterized by warm weather and early ripening, presenting challenges that ultimately rewarded winemakers with concentrated wines. Trapet actively manages the effects of global warming by training vines on stakes and avoiding shoot trimming, which helps lower pH and alcohol, and utilizes whole-cluster ferments. They also employ goblet pruning to limit yields and extend harvest periods for optimal phenolic ripeness.
This red wine exhibits a deep, luminous ruby to crimson to purple color with remarkable clarity. The nose is initially reserved but reveals a sense of majesty, with a complex aromatic bouquet of mulberry, bramble, mint, spice, forest floor, toasted spices, game, black raspberries, dark cherries, blackcurrant, and subtle floral notes of violet and rose, intertwined with hints of undergrowth. The palate offers superb concentration, a silky texture, and multidimensional breadth. The fruit is expressed with precision, supported by an exceptionally fine tannic structure and vibrant freshness. It is powerful yet elegant, with long, finessed tannins, cuddly acidity, and a lingering finish marked by noble minerality. The 80% whole cluster usage contributes an extraordinary vibrancy and subtle peppery notes. It is a wine of intensity, depth, and a classic Chambertin character.
Recommended food pairings include fine gastronomic dishes such as braised beef shoulder with truffled potatoes, wild duck enhanced by a cherry sauce, braised game dishes like venison loin, Coq au Vin, and characterful aged cheeses like Comté or Époisses.
This is a monumental wine with exceptional aging potential, capable of evolving majestically in the cellar for several decades, with a suggested drinking window from 2033-2045. It is a high-class Chambertin for serious collectors and grand occasions, truly representing the "King of Burgundies."
