FEATURES
The 1998 Domaine Trapet Chambertin Grand Cru is a testament to the nuanced elegance that Burgundy can achieve with age. The 1998 vintage in Burgundy experienced varied climatic conditions, with a warm summer followed by a relatively cool autumn, contributing to a wine of notable concentration and silky tannins. Burghound notably preferred the 1998 over the 1999 Chambertin, praising its superior density and concentration, describing it as "massively constructed and powerful with impressive density and a richness that ties the whole package together. 【Classic, old-style Chambertin as it should be】." This Chambertin presents a full, saturated ruby-red hue. The nose is extremely complex and subtle, weaving together animal, vegetal, and mineral aspects, with a musky hint of coffee. On the palate, it is silky, suave, and insidiously complex, offering superb intensity without excessive weight. Expect deeply pitched aromas of medicinal dark fruits, black licorice, and truffley underbrush, alongside notes of dark fruits, spices, and woody undertones. Some tasters have also found red fruit, earth, truffle, roasted game, dark cherry, and meaty qualities, with a rustic charm. It can be brooding initially, with floral and rich spice emerging after some time. This 1998 vintage, now over two decades old, embodies the elegance and complexity that only time can bestow upon a fine Burgundy. While still showing remarkable concentration and freshness, older wines like this can be delicate. Expect nuanced aromas and a refined palate that speaks of its age. Be mindful of the cork, which may be fragile; a Durand opener or an Ah-So can be very helpful. A gentle decant to separate any sediment is advisable, but avoid excessive aeration. Serve at a slightly cool cellar temperature (around 15° - 17° degrees Celsius) to best appreciate its evolved character. 🍴 Food Pairing: This robust red Burgundy is an excellent match for rich meat dishes, such as roasted game, beef, or truffle-infused poultry. Its earthy and spicy notes will complement hearty stews and aged cheeses beautifully. 🥂 Event Suggestion: This is a wine for contemplation and celebration, perfectly suited for a significant anniversary dinner, a sophisticated gathering of serious wine collectors, or a quiet evening where the wine itself is the star. Its maturity and complexity make it a profound experience.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Trapet is a wine company comprised of two estates, one in Alsace, the other in Burgundy. The company in its current dual-region configuration formed when Andrée Trapet inherited her parents' vineyards in Alsace in 2002. Her husband Jean-Louis has run Domaine Trapet Père et Fils in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1990, when he took over from his father Jean.
