FEATURES
The 2006 Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques 1er Cru hails from a domaine with a rich history, as the Esmonin family lineage in Gevrey-Chambertin dates back to the time of the Dukes of Burgundy. Sylvie Esmonin took the reins in 1985, transitioning the estate from bulk wine sales to bottling under her own label, eventually becoming Domaine Sylvie Esmonin in 1998. This particular vintage was vinified with 80% whole clusters, a traditional approach that contributes to its complexity. 【Family history dating back to the Dukes of Burgundy】.
The 2006 vintage for Burgundy was considered somewhat challenging, with an icy winter followed by cool, damp spring conditions that delayed budburst and flowering. Despite this, some good wines were produced.
This Gevrey Chambertin presents a good medium red colour. The nose is captivating and soil-driven, offering aromas of dark raspberry, smoked meat, roast coffee, fresh blood, dried flowers, pungent pepper, and mineral notes—truly an essence of Burgundy. On the palate, it is vibrant and penetrating, a step up in class, with lush and broad yet finely tannic textures. Expect complex flavours of smoked meat, pepper, herbs, brown spices, and chocolate, with bitter cherry fruit framed by peppery, spicy lift. An aura of wood smoke, black tea, peat, and musky florality adds to its allure.
Given its 2006 vintage, this is an older wine that has developed a beautiful tertiary complexity. While still vibrant, it's important to approach it with care. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar tool is recommended. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can allow the wine to open up and shed any sediment, but be mindful not to over-decant, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C.
This elegant and age-worthy Premier Cru Burgundy is perfect for special occasions or a contemplative evening. It pairs wonderfully with classic dishes such as duck, goose, and various game birds.
