FEATURES
The 1997 Burgundy vintage was generally good, though marked by unsettled weather. An early but uneven flowering was followed by a hot and humid summer, causing some heat stress for the vines. September brought storms, but most rot was managed. The resulting grapes were thick-skinned and rich in sugar, with quality varying. The Côte de Nuits produced some excellent reds, and while many wines were made for charming, easy drinking, the best examples from this vintage should still be enjoyable today.
Denis Mortet's 1997 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru displays a medium-to-dark ruby color, offering complex aromas of cinnamon, earth, and blackberry. On the palate, it reveals tangy red fruit, briar, and brambleberry flavors with significant fruit density and ample ripe tannins, hinting at a long life ahead. It is a medium-to-full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful wine. Stephen Tanzer noted its perfumed, ineffable aromas of black cherry, coffee, game, and Cuban tobacco, with superb generosity of flavor. Expect earthy notes like mushroom and leather, alongside red fruits, oak, chocolate, coffee, and hints of floral and spice. The wine's color is described as black and intense, with tannins enveloping the palate and a finish of fresh berries. 【Huge density of fruit and copious ripe tannins suggesting a long life】
🍴 This mature red Burgundy is an excellent match for gamey dishes, such as pheasant with chicory and cranberry compote.
🥂 This wine is structured for aging and can be enjoyed now or cellared further for continued development. Its complexity and bold, full-bodied character make it suitable for a sophisticated dinner.
For a wine of this age, expect some evolution in color and aroma. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so consider using a specialized opener like a Durand or an Ah-So. Decanting is recommended to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, typically for 30 minutes to an hour, but monitor closely as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cellar temperature of approximately 16-18°C (60-64°F).
