The 2021 vintage for Cédric Bouchard's Roses de Jeanne La Haute-Lemblée Blanc de Blancs Brut was a challenging year marked by frost and hail, leading to punishingly low yields, making this release even more minuscule than usual. Despite the difficulties, these new releases from Cédric Bouchard are considered "outrageously great" and among the most compelling wines in the entire Champagne region. This particular cuvée, La Haute Lemblée, is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown in the Côtes de Bar, a region closer to Chablis than Reims. Cédric Bouchard is known for his revolutionary philosophy of single vineyard, single vintage, single variety, low yield, low pressure, and zero dosage, an approach he has maintained since his first Champagne in 2000. The vines for La Haute Lemblée were planted in 1990/91 using a massal selection from Les Ursules, and the shallow clay topsoil is extremely rocky, littered with limestone scree, which contributes density to the grapes and finished wines. 【Cédric Bouchard was the first grower in the Aube to bottle a single vineyard, single vintage Champagne, making him a pathfinder in the region.】
Tasting notes for the 2021 La Haute Lemblée reveal initial aromas of lemon zest and white flowers, followed by chalky nuances reminiscent of wet stone rather than fruit. James Suckling describes it as a citrusy wine with yellow grapefruit, limes, white spring flowers, lemon curd, and a super-subtle exotic touch on the nose, with a medium body, zesty acidity, and a fine, tingling, electric citrusy mousse, leading to a taut, completely dry palate with acidity cutting through a long, salty finish. Vinous praises its palate-staining density and power, dazzling with textural intensity and pure, unbridled power, calling it one of the greatest, most truly epic Haute Lemblés ever. Other notes include minerals, ginger, honey, brioche, almond, biscui, citrus, grapefruit, and lemon.
This exquisite Blanc de Blancs is perfect for celebrating significant milestones or as an aperitif to kick off a sophisticated gathering. Its racy and energetic character makes it an excellent choice for a high-end brunch or a celebratory dinner.
