France Bordeaux Pomerol
FEATURES
The Clos Rene 1996 is a mature red wine from Pomerol, a prestigious appellation in Bordeaux. The 1996 vintage for Bordeaux was generally very good, particularly for the Left Bank, though Pomerol also saw reasonable success, with top estates producing wines with good color and supple fruit. However, Merlot, a key grape in Pomerol, faced challenges due to rain in August and late September, leading to some dilution and grey rot. Despite this, the best Pomerols from 1996 are described as rich and tannic. Tasting notes for Clos Rene 1996 reveal a moderately aromatic nose with creamy notes and tar, characteristic of Pomerol. On the palate, it starts round and flavorful, evolving into a slightly rustic tannin grain with medium length. Expect a rich and complex profile with notes of coffee, caramel, smoke, violets, and black currants, supported by firm, silky tannins and good balance. Other descriptors include plum, blackcurrant, black fruit, leather, earthy, and spice notes like pepper and licorice. For a wine of this age, a perfectly cellared bottle will have developed extraordinary nuances and flavors, with tannins and acidity softening and fruit integrating beautifully with oak, revealing wonderful tertiary notes. When serving, handle with care as older corks and capsules can be fragile. Decanting is highly recommended for a wine of this age to allow it to breathe and separate from any sediment. Pour slowly and steadily, and consider using a fine mesh filter. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Food pairing suggestions: This classic Pomerol pairs exceptionally well with traditional dishes such as roasted lamb, beef, poultry, or game. Its earthy and complex notes would also complement mushroom-based dishes or mature hard cheeses. Event suggestions: The Clos Rene 1996 is ideal for a special anniversary, a milestone birthday celebration, or an intimate gathering of wine connoisseurs who appreciate the elegance and complexity of aged Bordeaux. 【A classic expression of aged Pomerol】
