FEATURES
The 2023 Jean Chartron Puligny Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru is anticipated to be a wine of remarkable intensity and concentration. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy benefited from ideal climatic conditions, with a hot summer, cool nights, and moderate precipitation, leading to a radiant harvest in early September. Winemaker Anne-Laure Chartron noted that 2023 yields were normal, and the vintage is characterized by good balance between acidity and fruit, offering a charming and fresh style, akin to the 2017s but with more freshness. This wine is crafted from 100% Chardonnay grapes, sourced from vines averaging 40 years of age in the prime Clos du Cailleret climat, which boasts south-east facing slopes and clay-limestone soils with pebbles and gravel, contributing to its characteristic minerality. The winemaking involves fermentation in oak barrels (30% new) and aging on fine lees for twelve months, followed by four months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. 【This wine is described as having more precision and minerality compared to the Clos de la Pucelle at this stage, vibrant and poised with real drive and energy, representing an outstanding contribution to the vintage.】
Tasting notes reveal a pale gold hue with subtle green reflections. The nose is beautifully complex, offering fresh citrus, white flowers, delicate fresh almonds, fine minerality, and subtle toasted accents. On the palate, it is full, perfectly balanced, and charms with mineral freshness and elegant structure, leading to a remarkably long finish. Critics also note aromas of grapefruit and passionfruit with suggestions of acacia flowers and spice, a dense texture balanced by crisp acidity, and a concentrated, lightly spiced palate with a keen line of acidity.
Food pairing suggestions include fish in sauce or grilled, roasted or braised poultry, mature cheeses like Comté or Cîteaux, or regional specialties such as vol-au-vent or pike quenelles.
This wine is suitable for celebratory dinners, special occasions, or as a sophisticated gift for a wine connoisseur. It can be enjoyed now or cellared until around 2033, with some critics suggesting it could drink well for at least another 30 years, potentially until 2065. It is recommended to serve it at 13-14°C, opening the bottle three hours before tasting without decanting.
