FEATURES
The 2021 Domaine Takahiko Nana-Tsu-Mori Pinot Noir hails from Hokkaido, Japan, a region increasingly recognized for its cool climate Pinot Noir. Crafted by the visionary Takahiko Soga, this flagship wine is produced from a 4.6-hectare vineyard planted with 13 different Pinot Noir clones, farmed using beyond organic principles. The 2021 vintage is noted for being more fruit-forward than typical Japanese red wines, showcasing a good concentration of sweet red fruits and an earthy, spicy, long finish. Uniquely, no sulfur dioxide was added in this vintage, and it underwent whole cluster fermentation in neutral tanks before aging in French oak barrels (15% new). Critics have rated this vintage highly, with Wine-Searcher giving it 92/100 and CellarTracker users scoring it between 93-95 points. The winery aims for an 'umami quality' in its wines, achieved by including stems in fermentation, which imparts notes of mushroom, forest floor, and miso, making it an ideal complement to Japanese cuisine.
This Pinot Noir offers an intricate aroma of ripe red cherries, subtle earthiness, and floral undertones, with vibrant red fruit flavors and a touch of citrus zest. Delicate layers of herbs, tea leaves, and a hint of oak may emerge as it opens. On the palate, it is elegant and medium-bodied, with soft, fine tannins and refreshing acidity, culminating in a grounded, earthy finish that reflects its Yamagata terroir. Specific notes include strawberry, raspberry, plum, blueberry, black fruit, mint, cinnamon, clove, and violet, alongside earthy and mushroom characteristics.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions include seared duck, mushroom risotto, mild aged cheeses, grilled fish, roasted chicken, light pasta dishes, squab, aged beef, and white meats or fish in sauce. It is particularly exceptional with Japanese raw fish dishes like sashimi.
🥂 Given its rarity and critical acclaim, the 2021 Nana-Tsu-Mori Pinot Noir is perfectly suited for special celebrations, exclusive wine tastings, or as a distinguished gift for a discerning wine collector. Its recommended aging potential also makes it a superb addition to any cellar. 【Extremely rare with aging potential, showcasing Japan's unique umami terroir】
