FEATURES
Roagna's Barbaresco Faset 2017 is an exquisite expression of Nebbiolo from the Faset cru in Barbaresco, Piedmont. The 2017 vintage was a warm season, lending the wine an accessible richness while maintaining the delicate floral and mineral qualities Roagna is known for. However, some sources note that 2017 was a year with heat and drought, yielding wines with less depth and structure than more favorable vintages, and vineyard signatures might be less delineated. Roagna employs traditional vinification methods, including extended maceration and aging for approximately 5 years in large old oak casks, promoting purity and subtle wood integration. This wine is only made in vintages where it is expected to age 30+ years.
This wine showcases a clear garnet hue, with a light-to-medium garnet color and some bricking at the rim. The nose delights with a bouquet of floral notes like mauve, hibiscus, hollyhocks, rose petal, dried flowers, and fruity cherries, preserved raspberries, Montmorency cherry, dried cranberry, orange peel, and blood oranges. Spicy aromas of black pepper, cedar, juniper berries, liquorice, anise, allspice, pipe tobacco, sassafras, and distinct earthiness are also present. On the palate, it balances power and elegance, with layers of red fruit, macerated cherry and strawberry, plum, tar, iron, and eucalyptus. It has a supple yet energetic midpalate, fine tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, spicy finish with lingering fruit and white pepper accents.
Food pairing suggestions: Partners beautifully with traditional Piedmontese fare such as tajarin with butter and sage, risotto with porcini mushrooms, or braised veal (brasato al Barbaresco). Also pairs well with mature cheeses like Castelmagno or Taleggio, autumnal roasted game birds, wild mushroom dishes, fresh tagliarini with truffle and parmesan cheese, light meat, grilled dishes, medium-old cheese, terrines/pasty, and mild game dishes.
Event suggestions: This elegant and complex Barbaresco is suitable for sophisticated dinner parties, special family gatherings, or as a thoughtful gift for a wine connoisseur. It's drinking well now but will reward further cellaring, with a storage potential extending beyond 2043. Decant at least an hour before serving at 16-18°C.
