The 2014 vintage in Piedmont was initially considered challenging due to a cool, wet summer and some hailstorms. However, Barbaresco was largely spared the worst, and a crucial late-season improvement with warm, sunny weather in September and October allowed Nebbiolo grapes to ripen fully. While quality was mixed across the region, diligent producers like Roagna crafted exceptional wines, resulting in graceful, elegant Barbarescos with good acidity and impressive structure, reminiscent of classic Piemontese wines from the 1960s and 70s.
Roagna, a family estate with a winemaking legacy since the 1850s, is renowned for its meticulous approach, including late harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness—a critical factor in 2014. The Crichet Pajé vineyard, a mere 1.83 hectares, boasts unique calcareous marl soil with high active limestone, benefiting from a microclimate moderated by its amphitheater-like position opening to the Tanaro river. The vines are over 40 years old, contributing to the wine's depth. This particular bottling of the 2014 vintage is exceptionally rare, with only 1,640 bottles produced, and undergoes an extended eight-year aging period in oak cask and cement. 【Extremely rare bottling with only 1,640 bottles produced and an extended eight-year aging period.】
Tasting notes describe a slender and extremely delicate wine with fragile floral aromas of roses or fresh violets, framed by light mineral shadings, aniseed, and iron ore. It is elegant and refined, offering ethereal beauty, nuance, and complexity without excess weight. Hints of kirsch, red plum, mint, and spice lead to a refined, sublime finish. The tannins are structured yet maintain a magical lightness and ethereal quality.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions: This powerful red wine excels with traditional Piedmontese dishes featuring rich meats and white truffles, such as Risotto al tartufo bianco or Manzo stufato alla Piemontese. It also pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, game (deer, wild boar), wild poultry like pheasant or duck breast, and strong, aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.
🥂 Event suggestions: A truly special wine for connoisseurs and collectors, perfect for milestone celebrations, a sophisticated dinner party, or as a prized addition to a serious cellar. Its remarkable aging potential (2024-2055) makes it ideal for long-term enjoyment.
Serving advice: For a wine of this age, handle with care. Old corks can be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the complex aromas to unfold and to separate any sediment. Serve at 18-20°C (64-68°F) in large, round wine glasses.
