FEATURES
The 2019 Gaja Barbaresco hails from a vintage considered classic for Piedmont, despite a tricky start with a cold, wet spring. Abundant rainfall later in the season and warm temperatures ensured optimal phenolic ripening. Notably, Gaja opted not to produce its single-vineyard crus in 2019 due to residual effects from 2018 hail storms, instead channeling the finest fruit into this Barbaresco bottling, resulting in a wine of "enormous depth and clarity" and "fabulous balance".
This Barbaresco displays a vivid coloration. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of rose, wild strawberries, marzipan, wild fennel, juniper, iron, mineral, bitter chocolate, raw walnuts, orange peel, licorice, cherry, and various spices. The palate is balanced with crisp red fruits, bright acidity, and saline notes, supported by sleek, chalky tannins, leading to a long, floral- and spice-tinged aftertaste. It is medium- to full-bodied, pure, and linear.
Food Pairing: This versatile red pairs wonderfully with Lamb, Beef, Pasta, and Game (deer, venison). Specific recommendations include Tajarin pasta with white truffle, Braised veal shank (osso buco), Grilled porcini mushrooms, and Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Fit to Event: Appreciated for its balance and potential for aging, with an approachable yet evolving profile, this wine is best enjoyed from 2026 through 2045. It's a truly iconic wine from one of the world's best producers, making it ideal for special occasions, fine dining, or as a prized addition to a cellar. 【Critically acclaimed with 95 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator, and 94 from James Suckling, showcasing exceptional depth and balance from a challenging vintage where Gaja consolidated its best fruit into this bottling.】
