FEATURES
The 2015 vintage in Northern Rhône was exceptional, described by Marcel Guigal as "the vintage of a lifetime" and on par with legendary years like 1929, 1949, 1955, and 1961. It was a hot vintage, resulting in concentrated wines with great freshness. The Guigal family spent 15 years restoring Château d'Ampuis, a historic property dating back to the 11th century, and decided to produce an exceptional wine showcasing the best of Côte-Rôtie from seven top vineyards on both Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. The wine is aged for 38-42 months in 100% new oak barrels made at the estate's cooperage, a unique and robust oak regime for the region.
This wine pours a deep purple. It offers an unbelievably seductive perfume of sweet black fruits and spices, with an elegance despite intense concentration. Aromas include smoke-tinged dark berry preserve, candied violet, olive, fruitcake, black pepper, vanilla, lilac pastille, blueberry, blackberry, black plum, cherry cordial, cured meats, soy, crushed rock, and oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied with flavors of blackberry, cherry liqueur, bitter chocolate, floral pastille, steeped raspberry, boysenberry, fig, mocha, and roasted meat. It has high acidity, medium-plus fine tannins, and a long, floral finish with exotic spices. Critics note its dramatic depth and youthful power.
Food pairing suggestions: Excellent with 50-day dry-aged ribeye. Generally pairs well with rich, savory dishes like braised meats, roasted game, and mature cheeses.
Event suggestions: This powerful and concentrated wine is perfect for special occasions, celebratory dinners, or as a centerpiece for a serious wine tasting. Its aging potential (20+ years) makes it a superb addition to a cellar for future enjoyment.
