FEATURES
Domaine Gauby is a true benchmark in Roussillon, having single-handedly transformed the perception of the region's wines. Gérard Gauby, a former international rugby player, was instrumental in elevating the estate to its current level of excellence, with his son Lionel now overseeing the winemaking. Muntada is their flagship red wine, crafted from very old vines of Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, grown on limestone and schist-rich soils. The estate practices biodynamic viticulture, resulting in extremely low yields. The 2010 vintage garnered significant acclaim, notably receiving 94 points from Robert Parker.
This wine presents a pungently complex aromatic mélange of cedar, game, alkali, smoky black tea, Latakia tobacco, sweat, fresh blackberry, bramble, hung meat, and garrigue. Dark berry fruit, herbal notes of thyme and rosemary, subtle smokiness, and a distinct stony minerality are also present. On the palate, it is bright, juicy, with tangy berry skin tartness, berry seed crunchiness, ripe dark cherries, blackberries, elderberries, allspice, barnyard, meat, wet leaves, and crushed rock. It boasts an animalistic and ripe fruited profile with excellent structure, a soft mouthfeel, and still-present high tannins. The wine is powerful yet elegant, with fine, silky tannins, a deep structure that is never heavy, and a long, clean, delicately saline finish. It shows great potential for further development and can age for more than a decade.
