The 2023 Joh. Bapt. Schäfer Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling GG (Grosses Gewächs) comes from the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® Dorsheimer Goldloch vineyard, a site characterized by its southern alignment, up to 55% inclination, and rock-dominated loam soil with quartzite and quartzite conglomerates, rooted in a 280-million-year-old desert landscape. For the 2023 vintage, winemaker Sebastian Schäfer emphasized the importance of selection, noting that all Rieslings (apart from Kabinett) reached 90° Oechsle or higher. Ripeness brought both savoriness and aroma, alongside bright acidity, despite small yields. 【From the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® Dorsheimer Goldloch, known for producing opulent yet delicate Rieslings with ripe peach and exotic fruit notes.】
While specific tasting notes for the 2023 GG are still emerging, insights from the 2023 Kabinett Auction from the same vineyard suggest a wine with a meaty wild ferment, mineral and slate notes, and muted orchard fruit. It is described as juicy, tangy, with a crunchy red apple note, balanced, concentrated, and long. Expect freshness and elegance with citrus fruit and peel, built on finesse and freshness. Historically, Goldloch Riesling GGs offer beautiful and elegant stone fruit, peach, nectarine, and yellow plum notes, with crisp acidity, spicy minerality, and a slightly salty finish. The soil typically imparts ripe peach and exotic fruit aromas, contributing to a juicy, opulent yet delicate character.
🍴 As a dry Grosses Gewächs Riesling, it would pair excellently with rich pork dishes, various shellfish, poultry, and even spicy food. Cured meats could also be a delightful match.
🥂 An excellent choice for a sophisticated dinner, a focused wine tasting exploring Germany's finest dry Rieslings, or a special celebration where a powerful yet elegant white wine is desired. Its complexity makes it suitable for thoughtful appreciation.
