The 2023 vintage in Burgundy for white wines, including Meursault, is characterized by "very good freshness and energy". Pierre Lafon of Domaine des Comtes Lafon initiated the harvest in Meursault on August 29th, employing a record team of 70 people, with a strategic focus on preserving acidity. The resulting wines are noted for their generosity, balanced profile, and clear expression of terroir. Alcohol levels for the whites are typically around 13%.
The 2023 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or, still in barrel, is already showing impressive promise. Neal Martin of Vinous, in January 2025, highlighted its "impressive focus to its heightened yellow fruit, nectarine and grilled walnut aromas". The palate is described as "taut and fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity and ample weight," concluding with "touches of wild honey and white pepper". Tim Atkin, also in January 2025, found it "sappy, mineral and lightening like in intensity," with flavors of "winter citrus, plump yellow raisins and crusty baguette," leading to a "crisply dry with a ragingly long and mineral finish". Jasper Morris, in October 2024, noted a "pale lemon in colour" with aromas of "pears as well as apples," and a palate that "opens up very full... more in yellow fruit, coming close to honeysuckle, with a pleasing generosity". Pierre Lafon himself remarked on its "broader shoulders" due to the vineyard's soil and lower hillside position compared to Bouchères. 【This ambitious cuvée is built for long aging, promising a sumptuous evolution over time.】
This rich and complex white Burgundy pairs beautifully with luxurious dishes. Consider classic pairings such as lobster and fine shellfish, fish served with a delicate beurre blanc sauce, or cream-based poultry dishes. It also complements aged Burgundian cheeses. For a more refined experience, try it with Bar en croûte de sel, pan-fried scallops (Coquilles Saint Jacques poëlées), or partridge with truffles (Perdreau aux truffes). Simple yet elegant pairings like chicken and turkey also work wonderfully.
The 2023 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or is an exceptional wine, considered a "well-reviewed prize for your cellar". Given its youth and significant aging potential (drinking window from 2030-2036), it's perfect for laying down to mature for a special future occasion, perhaps a significant anniversary or milestone celebration. For those who appreciate the evolution of great white Burgundy, it's an ideal candidate for a vertical tasting in a decade or two.
