FEATURES
The 1994 German vintage was excellent, particularly for dessert wines. After three years of drought, 1994 brought much-needed rain, followed by an unusually hot July. While September rains posed challenges for early-ripening varieties, they were ideal for the onset of botrytis, a boon for Riesling growers. A sunny October with cool mists further encouraged sugar concentration and noble rot, leading to must weights not seen since the legendary 1976 vintage. The Nahe region, where this wine originates, produced truly great Rieslings, with Auslesen achieving remarkable depth and honeyed complexity from botrytis, without obscuring the underlying Devonian slate minerality. The finest examples from this vintage, now over 30 years old, remain vigorous and are still recommended for the cellar. This vintage is primarily celebrated for its 【must weights not reached since the legendary 1976 vintage】.
This Mathern Niederhäuser Rosenberg Riesling Auslese is described as sweet yet light and very complex. Expect a rich tapestry of honey, ginger, and wax, complemented by notes of peach, apple, apricot, orange, citrus, and lemon. Tropical hints of pineapple and mango may also emerge, alongside subtle almond and yeasty notes from its age.
Given its age, this wine embodies a classic old wine style, having gracefully evolved from primary fruit flavors to subtle, mature overtones. It's a testament to the longevity of fine German Riesling. When opening, exercise caution with the old cork and capsule. Decanting is highly recommended to allow the wine to breathe and reveal its full aromatic complexity, as well as to separate any potential sediment. Serve slightly chilled, but not too cold, to best appreciate its intricate bouquet.
Food Pairing: This exquisite sweet wine pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts, pork, shellfish, poultry, spicy food, and cured meats. It also makes a fantastic accompaniment to spicy Mexican or Asian cuisine.
Event Suggestion: This 1994 Auslese is ready to drink now and is perfect for special occasions, celebrations, or as a contemplative dessert wine. Its remarkable age makes it an ideal choice for an anniversary or a milestone birthday.
