WINE REGION
France Bordeaux Pessac-Leognan
FEATURES
The 1998 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc hails from a vintage in Bordeaux where ideal climatic conditions in Pessac-Leognan contributed to wines of significant prowess. The estate, known for early harvesting, produced small, thick-skinned grapes, resulting in a low yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare. The winemaking philosophy focuses on creating complex, fresh, and never heavy wines with an incredibly long aftertaste. This white Bordeaux, a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon, is remarkably impressive for its age, showcasing complexity and freshness after more than 25 years. Tasting notes reveal a tightly-knit structure with hints of green beans, melons, figs, and minerals. It is medium-bodied, displaying fig, melon, bell pepper, and grapefruit notes, culminating in a surprisingly long, refreshing finish. Further evolution brings forth a ripe, rich fragrance of hay, lanolin, crushed herbs, citrus, and honeysuckle, alongside gorgeous sweet fruit, complex dried herbs, and honey. Some tasters also find notes of honey, vanilla, straw, and tropical fruit, balanced by good acidity, leading to a clean finish. The wine can present a lightly colored appearance for its age. 【Impressive aging potential for a white Bordeaux, showcasing complexity and freshness after 25+ years.】 This sophisticated and evolved white wine is perfect for a special dinner or a gathering of discerning wine enthusiasts. Its contemplative nature makes it ideal for introspective sipping. For a wine of this age, expect some evolution in color and aroma. The cork might be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged cork puller. Decanting is generally recommended for older white wines to allow them to open up and to check for any sediment, though for a white wine, it might be less about sediment and more about aeration. Serve slightly chilled, around 10-12°C (50-54°F). Food pairing suggestions include rich fish dishes, poultry, and aged cheeses. It has been noted to pair exceptionally well with sushi.
BACKGROUND
Domaine de Chevalier, classified Grand Cru Classe de Graves, is one of the most important wine estates in Pessac Leognan. The estate has around 45 hectares (110 acres) under vine on gravel- and clay-rich soils, with most of that dedicated to the red grape varieties. While Cabernet makes up the bulk of plantings, there is also Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, as well as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified in lots to ensure the best possible wine – Domaine de Chevalier has a reputation for making good wines even in average vintages.
