FEATURES
The M. Chapoutier Ermitage Vin de Paille 2000 is a rare and exquisite sweet white wine from the Hermitage appellation in France's Northern Rhône Valley, crafted entirely from Marsanne grapes. This vintage is noted for its unctuous texture and a gorgeous perfume of orange marmalade intertwined with truffles and crushed walnuts. Early tasting notes from 2004 highlighted aromas of marzipan, grilling peach, and orange zest, with a great balance of sweet fruit, almond paste, and impressive acidity. Other descriptors include honey, caramel, apricot, raisin, almond, and marmalade notes. The production technique for Vin de Paille involves drying grapes on straw mats for two months before crushing and vinification, resulting in a minimum concentration of 360g of sugar per liter, with the final wine having around 15% alcohol and 105g/l residual sugar. Fermentation and aging occur entirely in oak barrels for 24 months. 【Rarity and Traditional Production Method】 This 2000 Vin de Paille is a wine of tremendous richness and moderate sweetness, balanced by good acidity. Given its age, it's important to handle this wine with care. Old corks can be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar tool is recommended. Decanting is advisable to allow the wine to breathe and to separate any potential sediment, though for a sweet wine, a shorter decant might be preferred to preserve its delicate aromatics. Serve slightly chilled, but not too cold, to best appreciate its complex bouquet and texture. It can be enjoyed young, but historical examples suggest it ages beautifully. 🍴 Food Pairing: This luxurious sweet wine pairs wonderfully with rich desserts like crème brûlée, fruit tarts, or blue cheeses such as Roquefort. Its nutty and marmalade notes would also complement foie gras or a delicate almond cake. For an Eastern pairing, consider mooncakes with lotus seed paste or a rich red bean soup. 🥂 Fit for Event: This is a perfect wine for a celebratory dessert course, a special anniversary, or as a contemplative after-dinner drink. Its rarity and unique character make it an excellent choice for a connoisseur's tasting event or a luxurious gift.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
