FEATURES
The 2018 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis is a superb representation from a domaine with a rich history, passed down through 14 generations since 1620. Benoît Droin, who took over winemaking in 1999, has elevated the estate to the very top of the Chablis hierarchy with his meticulous vineyard management and artistry in the cellar. The Droin style emphasizes purity, transparency, powerful concentration, and deep minerality. The 2018 vintage in Chablis was notably warm, resulting in wines with rich, fleshy fruit and a more upfront, consumer-friendly profile, often described as having lower acidity and higher flavor. Some experts even compare it to the generous 1982 vintage. This Chablis Village wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and aged on fine lees for 8-10 months, without bâtonnage, preserving its crisp character.
On the palate, this Chablis is generous and lively, initially offering notes of lemon, oyster shell, and flint. James Suckling noted a very attractive, fresh mango and peach nose leading to a super fleshy, open, and drinkable palate. Other tasting notes reveal a tight and lean profile with stony minerality, lemon peel and pith, and subtle white blossoms, making it understated yet memorable. It can also present savory hazelnut-oak, ripe yellow peaches, and a smooth, glossy fruit flesh, with a mineral undercurrent and a fresh, toasty finish. This wine is known for its excellent size, weight, and mid-palate density, culminating in a dry, saline, and persistent finish, offering fine aging potential.
🍴 This versatile Chablis is perfect as an aperitif with "gougère" cheese puff pastries or cold meats. For starters, it shines with fish terrine or various seafood dishes, including shellfish, crab, and lobster.
🥂 This wine is an excellent choice for a wide range of occasions, from casual gatherings to more formal seafood dinners. Its vibrant freshness and mineral character make it ideal for spring and summer events. It's also a fantastic introduction to the classic minerality of Chablis. While enjoyable in its youth, its structure and concentration mean it can be cellared for over 10 years, with aromas evolving to more powerful gun-flint and undergrowth notes, making it suitable for long-term enjoyment in great vintages. 【A perfect introduction to the minerality of Chablis wines, with excellent aging potential】
