The 2002 Pol Roger Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Vinothèque is a late-release Champagne that has matured gracefully, benefiting from extended maturation in Pol Roger's deep cellars. This vintage is characterized by remarkable ripeness and good acidity. The wine displays an intense golden-yellow hue with a lively stream of fine bubbles. On the nose, it opens with a deep bouquet of orange zest, Mirabelle plum, and burnt sugar, mingled with dried fruit and a faint hint of gunpowder, evolving to complex aromas of lightly toasted brioche, raisins, and candied fruit. The palate is full-bodied and layered, with notable musculature and flesh supported by a racy spine of acidity and ample tension, concluding with a long, enveloping finish marked by a delicate saline nuance. It boasts a powerful, rich structure, yet is well-balanced with intensely flavorful notes of honey and citrus, lending a refreshing acidity. 【Considered by some critics as possibly the greatest Winston Churchill ever, with perfect balance of maturity and crisp fruit.】
Food pairing suggestions include shellfish, crab, and lobster. Its complex and traditional sparkling style also makes it an excellent match for grilled brioche, roasted walnuts, honeycomb, and crème brûlée.
This exceptional Champagne is ideal for significant celebrations, milestones, or as a luxurious aperitif. Its robust character and maturity also make it suitable for pairing with a gourmet meal, reflecting Churchill's appreciation for older wines.
