The 2013 vintage for Burgundy, particularly for Domaine Fourrier's Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, was challenging due to cold, wet winter and spring conditions that delayed budburst and flowering. However, Domaine Fourrier masterfully navigated these weather patterns, resulting in a wine of notable complexity that encourages a re-evaluation of this often-overlooked vintage. The Clos Saint-Jacques is a highly revered slope within Burgundy, known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir.
Tasting notes describe a generous nose of brambly red fruit, with hints of sage and broom, well-defined and abundant in fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, showcasing precision, character, and superb minerality that extends to a long, sustained finish with a ferrous note. This wine exhibits tremendous transparency and is utterly engaging. Further nuances include red and black cherry fruit interwoven with minerals and palpable tension, a poised profile with crisp acidity, a pleasant saline touch, and real intensity on the finish. It presents a symphony of red fruits laced with an earthy undertone, floral hints, and subtle oak nuances, revealing an elegant tannic structure and bright acidity, with unfolding layers of red cherry depths and hints of spice. 【This wine stands as a testament to the winemaker's adaptive artistry in a challenging vintage, offering complexity and significant maturation potential.】
🍴 Food Pairing: This elegant red Burgundy is an excellent match for duck, goose, and various game birds.
🥂 Event: This is a collector's piece boasting poise and longevity, requiring discerning patience from investors and collectors. It is a wine that benefits significantly from decanting and further maturation in the cellar, making it suitable for a very special dinner, a dedicated tasting event, or as a prized addition to a long-term collection.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Fourrier is a well-regarded wine producer based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy's northern Côte de Nuits subregion, France. Its wines mostly made from Pinot Noir. Jean-Marie Fourrier took over his family estate in 1994, aged just 23. He worked with the legendary Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée in the late 1980s. The latter's influence is reflected in the domaine's fastidious approach in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the winery.
