FEATURES
The 1985 vintage for Barbaresco, and Piedmont in general, is considered exceptional and a turning point, often hailed as the first 'modern' hot vintage. Despite initial predictions that these wines might not age well due to the hot growing season and early accessibility, many 1985 Barolos and Barbarescos have shown remarkable longevity and are drinking beautifully today. The year saw a cold winter, followed by cool temperatures in March and April, then a glorious summer from June until the Nebbiolo harvest in mid-October. This allowed for full ripening of the Nebbiolo grape, resulting in a large yield of exceptional quality. Many younger, experimental producers utilized techniques like bunch-thinning and shorter maceration, contributing to new levels of aromatic complexity and rounder tannins. This Montersino di Ferro Michele Barbaresco 1985, crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, would likely present a dense garnet red color with slight orange reflections, typical of an aged Barbaresco. Expect intense aromas of ripe cherries, mineral notes, tea leaves, rose petals, spices, and licorice. On the palate, it should be full-bodied with mature, sweet tannins, fresh acidity, and a round, elegant structure, leading to a long, persistent finish. While mature, well-stored bottles of 1985 Barbaresco can still offer another decade or more of life. 【First 'modern' hot vintage with exceptional quality and longevity.】 🥂 Fit for event: This is a wine for a special occasion, perhaps a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or an intimate gathering of serious wine enthusiasts. Its age and complexity make it a contemplative wine, perfect for a quiet evening with good company, allowing its nuances to unfold. Given its age, it's a testament to the longevity of Barbaresco and a wonderful opportunity to experience a piece of Piedmontese history. Remember that older wines can be fragile. Ensure the bottle has been stored properly, ideally upright for at least 24 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Use a Durand or an Ah-So opener for the potentially delicate cork. Decanting is highly recommended for at least 2 hours to allow the wine to breathe and shed any sediment, but observe the wine closely as very old wines can sometimes fade quickly after decanting. Serve at 18°C (64°F). 🍴 Food pairing: This mature Barbaresco pairs exquisitely with rich, savory dishes. Think oven-baked or roasted white meats, grilled red meats and vegetables, hearty meat stews, and wild game. It also complements aged, ripe cheeses beautifully. For an Eastern pairing, consider slow-cooked Cantonese beef brisket or a rich Peking duck, where the wine's acidity and tannins can cut through the richness. For a Western pairing, classic choices include truffle-infused pasta, braised oxtail, or a robust mushroom risotto.
