FEATURES
The 2020 Le Petit Mouton from Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a powerful and concentrated second wine, showcasing a pure, Cabernet Sauvignon-driven style. It's lauded for its flamboyant and striking character, with a supple and soft texture for a young wine, despite a high Cabernet percentage. The vintage benefited from the Grand Vin deriving almost exclusively from the estate's core gravel terraces, meaning many parcels typically in the first wine contributed to Le Petit Mouton in 2020. 【 Exceptional quality for a second wine, often compared to a First Growth 】. Expect aromas of violets, blackberries, bark, iodine, cassis, cigar wrapper, and graphite. On the palate, it's full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins and a long, satisfying finish, offering notes of dark red plum, blood orange, pomegranate, mint, and cinnamon. Some critics note a serious, inky depth with a bitter chocolate brownie feel and intense black fruits. This wine is tightly knit and concentrated, needing 4-5 years of bottle age but capable of two decades of longevity.
🍴 Food Pairing: This robust red pairs beautifully with classic Western dishes like roasted lamb, beef Wellington, or a rich mushroom risotto. For an Eastern touch, consider pairing it with Cantonese roasted goose or a slow-cooked red-braised pork belly.
🥂 Event Suggestion: Ideal for a sophisticated dinner party or a special celebration, particularly for those who appreciate a fine Bordeaux with aging potential. It's also a fantastic choice for a wine tasting event focused on comparing second wines of top chateaux.
BACKGROUND
Château Mouton Rothschild is located in the commune of Pauillac, in the Medoc, 30 miles (50km) northwest of the city of Bordeaux. The estate comprises 90 hectares (222 acres) of vineyards, mainly on gravel-based soils, and is situated in the northern part of the commune just south of Château Lafite Rothschild. Most of the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15 percent planted to Merlot and a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard, typically for top Medoc estates, is densely planted and the average vine age is more than 40 years old. Harvest is done by hand, and the juice is fermented in oak vats in a gravity-fed vat room opened in 2012. After fermentation, the wine sees 22 months in new oak before bottling.
