WINE REGION
France Burgundy Gevrey-Chambertin
FEATURES
The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was a remarkable one, described as both miraculous and paradoxical, yielding fresh, vibrant wines with lower pHs and alcohol levels compared to 2019 and 2018. These wines are noted for their shimmering texture and juicy character, possessing the structure to age gracefully for decades. Gevrey-Chambertin, in particular, proved resilient to the extreme conditions of the year, producing consistently high-quality wines. Pierre Duroché himself considers his 2020s to be among the densest wines he has ever crafted, yet beautifully balanced with amazing acidity. 【Pierre Duroché believes his 2020s are the densest wines he has ever made, balanced with amazing acidity.】 Tasting notes for the Duroche Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques 2020 reveal a beguiling, tertiary bouquet tinged with wet limestone, precise red berry fruit, and hints of bay leaf. It is medium-bodied with fine, powdery tannins, offering a saline quality on the palate that builds towards a lightly spiced, tensile, and lingering finish. Expect notions of dark berries, loamy soil, spices, licorice, vine smoke, and rose petals, presenting as quite tightly wound and more reserved initially than the 2019 vintage. Other descriptions highlight deep raspberry fruit surging across the palate in harmony, with excellent nuances and floral peony notes, alongside brambly red fruit, crushed stone, and potpourri. It's a wine of real class, silky smooth, harmonious, and fanning out gently on a persistent finish, with drenching dark fruit and very fine tannins. Food pairing suggestions include classic Burgundy pairings such as roasted duck, game birds, rich mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Its structure and fruit concentration also make it an excellent match for roasted lamb or beef bourguignon. This wine is perfectly suited for a sophisticated dinner, a special celebration, or as a valuable addition to a cellar for long-term aging, promising evolving complexity and enjoyment.
