FEATURES
The 1989 Chateau Coutet Cuvée Madame is a truly exceptional sweet wine, produced only in the best vintages and in very limited quantities, with only about 1,000 bottles made in 1989. The 1989 vintage in Bordeaux was marked by an early semi-ripening and a summer with abundant sunshine, comparable to the record year of 1961. This blockbuster sweet wine presents a deep, bright gold color. On the nose, it offers seductive aromas of Cointreau, candied ginger, nutmeg, crème brûlée, honey-coated almonds, and incense with a waft of anise. Some tasters also note marmalade and apricot aromas, with hints of coffee, custard, and pain grillé. The palate is incredibly youthful, rich, and opulent, with many layers and a seamlessly racy backbone, finishing very long and spicy. It's unctuously-textured, oozing glycerin extract and richness, offering a rare combination of power and complexity, with amazing intensity yet elegant and restrained. Perfectly judged sweetness combined with mouth-watering acidity makes this an incredible wine. 【Incredibly youthful, rich and opulent with a rare combination of power and complexity】 For wines of this venerable age, it's important to approach them with care. The corks can be fragile, so a Durand opener or an Ah-So might be beneficial. Decanting is highly recommended to allow the wine to breathe and shed any sediment, typically for 30 minutes to an hour, but observe its evolution in the glass. Serve slightly chilled, around 10-12°C (50-54°F), to best appreciate its complex aromatics and refreshing acidity. Food Pairing: This magnificent sweet wine is a perfect partner for classic foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort, or rich fruit tarts and crème brûlée. For an East-meets-West approach, consider pairing it with a delicate almond tofu dessert or even a subtly spiced duck confit. Event Suggestions: An ideal choice for a milestone anniversary, a sophisticated dessert course at a formal dinner, or a contemplative tasting session among connoisseurs. Its rarity and complexity make it a centerpiece for any special occasion.
BACKGROUND
Château Coutet is a Premier Cru Sauternes producer located in the Barsac region of Bordeaux. It is one of the oldest producers in Sauternes, and has the longest cellar in the region, at 110 meters.Château Coutet is primarily made up of Semillon, with smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The grapes are grown on clay and limestone soils, giving a distinct minerality to the sweet, botrytized wine. The wine is then aged 18 months in French oak barrels that are 70-100 percent new. Château Coutet also makes a second-tier label called La Chartreuse de Coutet, and in the best years, the estate also produces 1200 bottles of a premium wine, Cuvée Madame de Château Coutet.
