FEATURES
The 1974 Cathiard Molinier Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Meurgers hails from a challenging vintage in Burgundy. The year saw a mild winter and clement spring, but from mid-August to October, cold and rainy weather led to diluted grapes and unbalanced wines, with heavy October rains also bringing botrytis. Scrupulous sorting and green harvesting were crucial for red wine quality, and yields were notably high for Côte de Nuits reds. Despite these difficulties, Nuits-Saint-Georges wines are generally known for their substantial, powerful character. This particular Premier Cru, Les Meurgers, comes from a vineyard with vines planted as early as 1945. While modern Cathiard wines are celebrated for their precision, balance, and aging potential, a 1974 bottle will offer a unique glimpse into a bygone era, reflecting the vintage's complexities. 【Highly sought-after Premier Cru from a legendary producer with old vines】. This wine has received a critic review of 93/100, described as a Red - Savory and Classic style. 🍴 Food Pairing: This mature Nuits-Saint-Georges would beautifully complement classic French dishes such as roasted duck, goose, or other game birds. Its savory and classic profile would also pair well with earthy mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses. 🥂 Event Suggestions: Given its age and the nuances of the 1974 vintage, this wine is best suited for a very special, intimate gathering of experienced Burgundy enthusiasts or as a contemplative pour for a significant birth year or anniversary celebration. It's a wine to be savored and discussed, appreciating its historical context and the resilience of old vines. Serving Advice for this mature 1974 Burgundy: Wines of this age can be fragile. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Open with extreme care, perhaps using an 'Ah-So' opener, and inspect the cork for integrity. Decant only if significant sediment is present, and then immediately before serving, as excessive aeration can cause older wines to fade quickly. Alternatively, pour directly from the bottle, stopping when sediment appears. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F), in appropriate Burgundy glassware to best appreciate its delicate and evolved aromatics. Be mindful of the old cork and capsule, which may be brittle.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a highly regarded family wine producer based in Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Known for its sought-after, high-priced Pinot Noir wines, made from grapes sourced from First and Grand Cru vineyards in Vonn and surrounding appellations. The history of the winery begins with Sylvain’s grandfather, who started making wine in Burgundy in the 1930s. Later, descendants took over the winery and ran it until the 1980s. With approximately 5 hectares (12 acres) of vines, its most prestigious wines come from this Grand Cru vineyard, and its portfolio also includes several Grand Cru wines from Nuit-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée.
