FEATURES
The 2001 Tignanello vintage is considered an exceptional year with an early bud break followed by normal, warm weather conditions and some showers, leading to optimum flowering and ripening. This resulted in great fruit, especially deep-colored and tannin-rich Sangiovese grapes. The Earth itself seemed to conspire with Antinori to produce a seminal chapter in Tignanello's saga in 2001, with Tuscany's benevolent sun and welcoming soils inscribing the year's weather peculiarities into the grapes.
The 2001 Tignanello is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It presents a deep dark velvet appearance with a black core, very dense and vital. The nose offers ripe black fruit, black cherry, cassis, blackberry, raisin, and fruit in rum, with present oak influence, sweet vanilla, tobacco, new leather, earthy characters, some licorice, and decent traces of green pepper. On the palate, it's rich with dark fruit characters, mostly black cherries and cassis, some raisin, earthy notes, and beautiful licorice, with dynamic spiciness, oak, and vanilla traces. It finishes smooth, long, and warm with a creamy texture and finely-grained tannins, being rich yet beautifully soft, harmonious, and balanced. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated it 93 points, noting perfectly focused plum and cassis fruit with sweet herbs and saddle leather, impeccable volume, roundness, and depth. Wine Enthusiast also gave it 93 points, describing blackberry, black cherry, graphite notes, and well-integrated vanilla, with a lush and concentrated mouthfeel and silky smooth tannins.
Food pairing suggestions include rich dishes such as grilled lamb, osso buco, or a hearty mushroom risotto. It also complements aged cheeses. It's an unbeatable "seal-a-deal-with-a-steak" wine.
For a wine of this age, it's advisable to handle the bottle gently to avoid disturbing any sediment. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24 hours before serving. Decanting is recommended to separate the wine from its sediment and allow it to breathe, enhancing its complex aromas and flavors. Use a good quality corkscrew, as older corks can be fragile. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
The 2001 Tignanello is a "perfect exemplar of an iron fist in a velvet glove: Powerful on nose and palate, but perfectly smooth, balanced and harmonious. Fantastic wine, which is still young and full of potential." It's a Super Tuscan of surpassing grace and complexity, a trailblazer that brought international acclaim to Tuscany. This wine is ideal for a sophisticated dinner party, a special anniversary, or a celebratory occasion where a wine with history and depth is appreciated. It's also an intriguing proposition for investors.
