FEATURES
The 2011 vintage in Saint-Émilion, while sometimes overshadowed by neighboring years, presented its own unique character. Spring was notably dry and warm, leading to an early flowering of Merlot. Although early summer saw rapid vine development, cooler, rainier August weather proved beneficial, slowing the cycle and allowing for optimal maturity and concentration while preserving crucial acidity and aromatic intensity. For Clos La Gaffeliere, the early hot and dry conditions were balanced by a more humid ripening period, ensuring good grape ripeness. This second wine from Chateau La Gaffeliere, the Clos La Gaffeliere 2011, offers an elegant and refined profile. Expect enticing notes of berry, multilayered fruit, and kirsch, complemented by wild blueberries and ripe black fruits. On the palate, it aims for elegance and finesse, showcasing a blend predominantly of Merlot (over 85%) with Cabernet Franc. Some broader characteristics of Chateau La Gaffeliere 2011 include a deep ruby color with plum, blackcurrant, black cherry, cedar, light menthol, vanilla, and pepper spice, alongside licorice, cocoa, and graphite, culminating in a long finish with fine tannins. It's noted for its surprising richness and a good balance of tannins and acidity. 【 One of the oldest family-owned vineyards in Saint-Émilion, with the family at the helm since the 1400s. 】 Food pairing suggestions: This versatile red Bordeaux pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Consider serving it alongside veal, pork, lamb, or roast chicken. It also complements Asian cuisine and grilled cheese, as well as classic beef and venison preparations. Event suggestions: The Clos La Gaffeliere 2011 is ready to drink now and can be enjoyed throughout the evening. For optimal enjoyment, serve it at around 15.5 degrees Celsius. While younger vintages benefit from 2-3 hours of decanting, older ones may only need a brief decant to remove sediment. This wine is crafted to be accessible and offers a consistent style of elegance and finesse, making it suitable for a wide array of gatherings, from intimate dinners to larger celebrations.
BACKGROUND
Chateau La Gaffeliere is a Bordeaux wine estate in the appellation of Saint Emilion. It is ranked as a Premier Grand Cru Classe B, and is one of the oldest family-owned vineyards in the region. The estate is located just south of Saint Emilion town, to the west of Chateau Pavie. There are around 20 hectares (50 acres) of vineyards, mostly planted to Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, although recent changes to the vineyard mean the exact proportions could change in the future. In the winery, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with malolactic fermentation taking place in barrel. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for up to 20 months.
