FEATURES
The 1996 vintage for Bordeaux was generally considered very good, with a mild winter and warm spring, though a capricious climate with an arid summer followed by September rains led to concentrated grapes with pronounced acidity, ideal for longevity. Château Figeac, located in Saint-Émilion, is known for its unique blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, producing wines of remarkable elegance and ageability. The 1996 Château Figeac is described as an exceptional Bordeaux wine, showcasing balance and complexity. 【Its ability to age for decades is quite exceptional, revealing an inimitable and complex bouquet as the years go by.】 On the nose, it offers a complex aroma of dark berries, graphite, light earthy nuances, cedar wood, tobacco, and an earthiness reminiscent of autumnal forests. The palate displays elegant fruit aromas, pleasant minerality, and well-integrated wood notes, with dark berries and a subtle hint of truffle. Some critics noted a medium-bodied profile with fine, ripe tannins, good intensity, and harmony, while others found it to be light-bodied, angular, and lean in its youth, with hard tannins that might not fully integrate. The wine develops flavors of tobacco-leaf with hints of black truffle over time, while retaining incomparable freshness of fruit. Its optimal drinking age is currently approximately 10 to 20 years after harvest, meaning it is reaching its full potential. Serving Advice: For a wine of this age (1996), expect the cork to be fragile; use a Durand opener or similar tool designed for older corks. Decanting is recommended for 1-2 hours to allow the wine to breathe and shed any sediment, which is common in older vintages. Handle the bottle gently to keep sediment at the bottom. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 Food pairing suggestions include beef fillet, lamb, venison, or mature hard cheeses. 🥂 This wine is perfect for special occasions, a connoisseur's gathering, or as a distinguished investment for those seeking maturity without sacrificing vibrancy.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Figeac is a property in the Saint Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. The grand vin is known for its rich nose, silky texture and elegance, and for its aging potential in better vintages. The grapes are vinified in a variety of small vessels, either conical, open-topped wooden vats or stainless steel tanks, which correspond to specific lots in the vineyard. The grand vin is aged in 100-percent new oak barrels, while Petit Figeac is typically aged is for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, 20 percent of which are new. Approximately 100,000 bottles of the grand vin are produced annually, with about 40,000 of Petit Figeac.
