WINE REGION
France Burgundy Gevrey-Chambertin
FEATURES
The 2000 vintage for this Gevrey-Chambertin Combe du Dessus from Denis Mortet was characterized by a rainy winter, hot and dry spring, and a humid July, followed by pleasant weather in mid-August and warm, sunny early September. The harvest, taking place from September 12th to 19th, yielded wines described as surprising, with good tannins, tasty, flattering, and showcasing the elegance of Pinot Noir. This vintage has been considered "greatly underestimated" for red Burgundy. This wine offers exquisite depth and complexity, with delicate notes of ripe berries, subtle undertones of earth and spices, and a rich, structured palate with silky tannins and a persistent finish. Expect cool red fruits, balanced acidity, fine tannins, and evolving mushroom and loam notes. It presents dark cherry red with some bricking, and on the nose, red fruits and mushrooms. The palate is beginning to reveal secondary or tertiary characteristics alongside red/black fruits, with a smooth texture that maturing Burgundy excels at. Further notes include red and black cherry, raspberry, violet, forest floor, and savory spice, with a medium-bodied profile, vibrant acidity, and a deep, savory finish. 【A greatly underestimated vintage that offers exquisite depth and complexity with significant aging potential.】 Food pairing suggestions: This mature red Burgundy is an excellent match for duck, goose, and various game birds. Event suggestions: This 2000 vintage is perfect for collectors and lovers of aged wines, making it an ideal choice for a special occasion where a complex and evolved red Burgundy is desired. Serving advice: Given its age, this 2000 Gevrey-Chambertin should be handled with care. The cork may be fragile, so a Durand opener or an Ah-So might be beneficial. Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and for any sediment to settle, but be mindful of older wines' fragility; a short decant (30-60 minutes) might be sufficient to awaken its aromas without losing its delicate tertiary notes. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine Denis Mortet is located in northern Burgundy and is famous for producing high-quality Pinot Noir wine. It is produced in a modern style and has a delicate taste. The domaine currently occupies 11.2 hectares (27 acres) and has also purchased part of the Le Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard. The winery was founded in 1956 when Charles Mortet purchased a hectare of vineyard and began selling fruit to merchants. Mortet's son Denis and his wife Laurence started working at the estate in 1978 and took over and established Domaine Denis Mortet in the early 1990s.
