WINE REGION
France Bordeaux Saint-Julien
FEATURES
🏰 The 2011 vintage in Bordeaux was a challenging season, yet Château Léoville Barton, a Second Growth estate in Saint-Julien, displayed its mastery by producing a wine of balance between structure and suppleness. Despite being considered a below-average vintage for Bordeaux reds, Léoville Barton's 2011 is often highlighted as one of the best wines of the vintage. It's characterized by an opaque purple color, with aromas of damp earth, underbrush, black currants, cedar, and hints of vanillin and incense. On the palate, it offers ripe cassis and blackberry notes intertwined with tobacco and moist earth distinctions, supported by firm tannins that age gracefully. 【 Resilient Vintage Excellence 】. This wine is a testament to the estate's ability to produce excellent quality even in a challenging vintage. 🍴 This Saint-Julien claret would be superb with classic roasted beef, lamb, or game birds. Its firm tannins and earthy notes also make it a great match for hard, aged cheeses like mature cheddar or Gouda. 🥂 Perfect for a formal dinner, a special celebration, or as a valuable addition to a wine collector's cellar. While Anthony Barton suggested drinking it young while waiting for the 2009 and 2010 to develop, many critics note its potential for long aging, with a drinking window extending for two decades or more. It is currently drinking well and will plateau for a few more years. Decanting for 1-3 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its complex aromas and soften its tannins.
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville Barton is a vineyard in the Saint-Julien region of Bordeaux, ranked a second growth in the 1855 Classification. The vineyard, which has gravel soils over clay, is planted 74 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 percent to Merlot and 3 percent to Cabernet Franc. After a manual harvest, fermentation takes place in large temperature-controlled wooden vats, and then the wine is aged in 50 percent new oak barrels.
