🏰 The 1999 Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is hailed as a brilliant effort and a long-term behemoth, with some considering it the greatest vintage Chave has produced since 1990. It was a ripe vintage for Northern Rhone wines. This Syrah displays a deep garnet core with a ruby rim. The nose is very intense, offering a complex bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow, smoke, flint, and a touch of Provencal herbs, evolving into more black liquorice scents. On the palate, it is full-bodied, symmetrical, and boasts very good weight and density. Expect notes of black plum, iodine, tar, and blueberry, with a fabulous texture, purity, and sweetness that lead to a finish lasting nearly a minute. High tannin, remarkably rich, concentrated extract, and tell-tale Hermitage fruit characteristics like blackberries and cassis are present, along with minerals and spice. Some describe it as meaty, dense, concentrated, and powerful, with smoky red and black fruits, dried flowers, cedar, cigar wrappers, spices, and peppery thyme, culminating in a vibrant finish of wild cherries, spices, blackberries, herbs, and smoke. While still needing time to be completely harmonious, it promises decades of evolution. 【Greatest vintage Chave has produced since 1990】.
🍴 Given its power and complexity, this Hermitage Rouge pairs exceptionally well with rich, savory dishes. Consider roasted lamb, beef stew, game meats like venison or wild boar, or strong, aged cheeses. Its robust character can also stand up to dishes with earthy notes, such as truffle-infused preparations.
🥂 This is a serious wine for collectors, requiring significant cellaring (7-10 years from release, with a potential to last 4-5 decades). It is ideal for grand celebrations, a special anniversary, or a sophisticated dinner where a powerful, aged Syrah is the star. Decanting for 1-3 hours is recommended for younger bottles to allow the wine to soften and open its perfume, while older vintages might need less, primarily to remove sediment.
