🏰 【The 1995 Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a legendary Syrah, masterfully blended from diverse hillside parcels to create an age-worthy masterpiece known for its masculine, mineral-drenched style.】 This magnificent Rhone classic, often described as opaque purple, offers an intoxicating bouquet of violets, black currants, tar, truffle, mineral, and earth. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with good underlying acidity and powerful yet sweet tannins, revealing liquid rock-like qualities, cassis, blackberry, and wild herbs, leading to a long, satisfying finish.
🍴 This powerful and elegant Syrah demands companions equally deep and earthy. It pairs exceptionally well with roasted lamb studded with rosemary, herb-crusted pork, or wild game. For a more adventurous pairing, consider charcoal-grilled octopus with black garlic, venison tartare, or a rich wild mushroom and lentil bourguignon. It can even complement dark chocolate with sea salt and black pepper.
🥂 This wine is a superb choice for a significant dinner, a vertical tasting, or a special occasion that calls for a truly profound and contemplative wine. With an anticipated maturity extending to 2030, it is drinking beautifully now but still has decades of life ahead. Decanting for 2-3 hours is highly recommended to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves and to manage any potential sediment. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Remember, older wines may have fragile corks and capsules, so open with care.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
wine serving
How should I serve this 1995 Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge and what is its optimal drinking window?
This mature Hermitage Rouge is best served at 16-18°C. We recommend using an Ah-So opener for older vintages like this to protect the cork. Decanting for 1-2 hours can help it open up and separate any sediment. It is currently in its prime drinking window and can be enjoyed now through 2030 and potentially beyond.

This Hermitage Rouge is a powerful, full-bodied Syrah, offering complex notes of dark fruits, black pepper, spice, and earthy undertones. It pairs beautifully with rich, savory Asian dishes such as braised beef, roasted duck, strong curries, or Korean BBQ.
