FEATURES
The 1988 vintage for Bordeaux was generally excellent, despite a cold, wet winter and spring. A long, dry, and hot summer ultimately saved the vintage, allowing for a harvest that extended into October for some Cabernet varieties. These wines are now approaching their peak maturity, often showcasing a classic, less overtly fruit-focused style with good extract and concentration, built for prolonged cellaring. This 1988 Les Fiefs de Lagrange offers an expressive and attractive bouquet of red berry fruit, iron, pressed flowers, and sandalwood. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, balanced by a fresh acidity, though some dryness may be creeping into the finish. Wine Spectator noted aromas of currant and sweet tobacco, leading to a full body with soft, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish, describing it as a little dusty but with plenty of fruit and character. 【 A veritable demonstration of balance, this wine illustrates the perfect alchemy between the three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. 】 Food pairing suggestions include classic dishes like beef and venison. Given its age, this wine requires careful handling. Old corks can be fragile, so consider using a specialized opener like a Durand. Decanting is recommended to separate any potential sediment and allow the wine to open up, but be gentle and brief – perhaps 30-60 minutes – as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its evolved character. This wine is ideal for a contemplative evening, a special anniversary, or a sophisticated dinner party with friends who appreciate the nuances of aged Bordeaux.
