FEATURES
The Krug Vintage Champagne Brut 1988 is a legendary release, celebrated for its exceptional balance between freshness and maturity, born from a year without excess. Krug famously reversed its vintage chronology, releasing the 1989 before the 1988, allowing the 1988 to achieve its full potential with over a decade of bottle aging in their cellars. This decision has resulted in a Champagne that explodes on the palate with tremendous depth and complexity, proving itself to be one of the most serious and ageworthy of its consecutive releases. 【It is often cited as one of the most highly rated champagnes of its era, with some critics flirting with a three-digit score.】 Upon sight, it presents a deep, intense golden color, hinting at its maturity and opulence. The nose is exotic and complex, revealing notes of white fruits, truffle, spices, honey, slightly browned apples, and a gentle nuttiness. The palate is long, fresh, and elegant, full of sensations like orange blossom, dried figs, ripe quince, mild spices such as cinnamon and ginger, combined with maple syrup, dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted notes. It maintains remarkable freshness for its long aging, with a crystal and long finish. Serving Advice for an Aged Champagne: Given its age, this 1988 Krug requires careful handling. Ensure the bottle has been stored horizontally in a cool, dark, and stable environment. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. The cork may be fragile, so use a two-pronged cork puller (Ah-So) or a Durand opener for best results. Decanting is generally not recommended for aged Champagne as it can dissipate its delicate aromas and effervescence too quickly. Serve slightly chilled, around 10-12°C (50-54°F), in tulip-shaped flutes or white wine glasses to appreciate its complexity. 🍴 Food Pairing: The delicacy and elegance of Krug 1988 contrast deliciously with rich, unctuous dishes. Consider turbot in hollandaise sauce, sea bass in butter, chicken with cream sauce, or desserts with dried fruits and almonds. Shellfish, crab, and lobster are also excellent companions. 🥂 Fit for Event: This is a truly exceptional Champagne, ideal for milestone celebrations, significant anniversaries, or as a centerpiece for a luxurious tasting experience. Its rarity and critical acclaim make it a profound choice for collectors and connoisseurs.
BACKGROUND
Krug is one of Champagne's most prestigious houses and its wines are among the most collectible and expensive in Champagne. The house was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a native of the Mosel region in Germany, who had moved to France and spent some time working for Jacquesson, the leading Champagne house of the time. Krug's philosophy was that every Champagne should be the best possible expression, and eschewed the common idea of a hierarchy of Champagne. Instead, he began to craft a premium wine from a reserve of wines vinified separately by the growers themselves, a wine that would eventually become the Grande Cuvée.
