FEATURES
The 1996 vintage in Bordeaux is celebrated as an exceptional year for Cabernet Sauvignon, particularly in Pauillac, where conditions were picture-perfect. This resulted in wines of remarkable quality and longevity, known for their intense purity, depth, concentration, and full-bodied structure. The vintage is characterized by a classic style with plenty of muscle and satisfying savoriness. This Chateau Latour Les Forts de Latour 1996, the esteemed second wine of a First Growth, presents a deep ruby red with subtle garnet reflections, indicative of its maturity. The nose unfolds a complex bouquet dominated by ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, and plums, accompanied by elegant notes of cedarwood, tobacco, and a hint of pencil lead, embodying classic Pauillac character. On the palate, it is powerful yet smooth, with firm, well-integrated tannins, dense fruit flavors, lively acidity, and nuances of dark chocolate, mocha, and mineral accents, leading to a long, complex finish. Critics have noted its youthful vigor amidst maturity, with Robert Parker calling it "one of the finest Forts de Latours of the last two decades." 【 This 1996 Les Forts de Latour is a testament to a great chateau's second wine, often surpassing lesser vintages' grand vins, and is now in an excellent drinking window with further aging potential. 】 It is perfectly suited for a celebratory dinner, a sophisticated tasting, or as a thoughtful gift for a discerning collector who appreciates mature Bordeaux. As a 30-year-old wine, this bottle requires careful handling. The cork may be fragile, so a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand is highly recommended. Decanting for 1-2 hours is advisable to allow the wine to fully open up and to separate any natural sediment, but observe its evolution closely. Serve at 16-18°C (61-64°F). 🍴 This classic Pauillac pairs exquisitely with robust dishes such as roasted lamb, prime rib of beef, or game. Its structure and savory notes also make it an excellent match for rich poultry dishes or even a roasted butternut squash.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Latour is one of Bordeaux's wines and the world's most famous wine producers. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Pauillac commune on the border of Saint- Julien, in the Medoc region. Typically for the region, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in the vineyard, accounting for around 80 percent of plantings. Merlot makes up most of the remainder, and there are also small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grand vin is only made from the vineyard plots surrounding the chateau and shown on the 1759 plan of the domaine. Latour makes two other wines: Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour, both of which are made from younger vines.
