FEATURES
The 2017 Zind Humbrecht Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru is a monumental Alsatian Riesling from one of France's most significant volcanic terroirs. The 2017 vintage in Alsace was "extremely contrasted," combining characteristics of both early and late ripening. While many vineyards suffered from frost and drought, the Rangen, with its unique high-altitude, cold-valley microclimate and steep slopes, remarkably yielded a normal, healthy, and rich crop that fermented exceptionally well.
This wine presents an intense golden yellow color. The nose is powerful, initially dominated by volcanic rock, flinty, and smoky aromas, gunpowder, and wet stone, gradually opening to reveal notes of citric and stone fruit, green apple, lemon, and a medicinal character. The palate is dense, tight, and complex, built upon profound saline minerality, a tight tannic extract, and vibrant acidity. It offers concentrated fruit with a finely bitter, stony depth, leading to an extremely long, pristine, and profound finish. 【Held as a monopoly by Domaine Zind Humbrecht since 1977, this mythical Alsace terroir produces a Riesling de garde with an inimitable personality, renowned for its telluric power and mineral verticality.】 Certified Organic and Biodynamic, this wine is crafted with minimal intervention and aged for 18 months in old French barrels. Critics have highly rated it, with Robert Parker's Wine Advocate giving 95-97 points, James Suckling 96 points, and Wine Enthusiast 96 points.
This Riesling requires significant patience and is expected to reach its full potential from 2025 onwards, capable of maturing admirably over 10 to 20 years, potentially until 2042. Serve at 10°C.
🍴 This powerful and complex Riesling is an excellent match for rich dishes such as meaty and oily fish, shellfish terrine with lobster bisque, veal sweetbread ragout with Riesling beurre blanc, or stuffed pork belly with Thai salad.
🥂 A truly exceptional wine for serious collectors and connoisseurs, perfect for milestone celebrations or as a long-term investment in a fine wine cellar.
