FEATURES
The 2010 E. Guigal Château d'Ampuis is from an "extraordinary" and "tannic and muscular vintage" in the Northern Rhône. This exceptional wine is a blend of seven different *lieux-dits*, co-fermented with approximately 10% Viognier, and aged for four years in new barrels, mirroring the vinification of Guigal's renowned "LaLas." It was recognized as #77 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2014 and received a stellar 99 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, hailed as an "off-the-hook effort that easily competes with the more expensive single-vineyard releases." Jeb Dunnuck also awarded it 97 points. The wine displays a deep dark color with mauve tints, offering a dense, expressive, and intense nose of spices, black fruits, and delicate oak. It is a tannic and racy wine, with flavors of prunes, blackberry, and vanilla, leading to a powerful, concentrated, and structured palate with solid tannins beautifully rounded by long oak aging. Notes also describe a purple, opaque, and bright appearance, with a nose of boysenberries, spice, slight lumber, black pepper, and roasted herbs. The full-bodied palate mirrors these notes with boysenberries, vanilla, spice, black pepper, and roasted herbs, culminating in a long finish. Having shed most of its baby fat, it now shows a classic, elegant, yet concentrated style, with gorgeous red and black fruits, smoked meats, minty herbs, graphite, and spring flower notes, all contributing to a layered, elegant mouthfeel, silky tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. 【99-point Robert Parker score, competing with LaLas】
🥂 Fit for event: This wine is still considered a baby and needs another 4-5 years of cellaring, after which it promises two decades or more of longevity. It can drink well for another ten to fifteen years, making it an excellent choice for a significant milestone celebration in the future. This complex, nuanced, and incredibly seductive Côte Rôtie can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15-20 years.
Serving Advice: For a wine of this age and caliber, careful handling is key. The cork may be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar device is recommended. Decanting is highly advisable, ideally for several hours, to allow the wine to breathe and fully express its complex bouquet, separating any sediment. Serve slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C).
🍴 Food pairing suggestions: Its robust character makes it ideal for gamey meats, roast red meats, braised dishes, and rich red sauces. It particularly benefits from fatty foods to balance its structure. Consider lamb, venison, or aged cheeses.
