Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees 1er Cru, 2004
🏰 The 2004 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru is a quintessential aged Burgundy, showcasing the unique characteristics of the vintage. While some 2004 Burgundies were noted for a 'green' character, this particular wine, after some aeration, evolves to reveal more serious weight and structure. It offers a deep, interesting, and slightly fecund aroma with flashes of high-toned fruit and faint spice. On the palate, expect a super fine, velvety texture with an intensity of dark red fruit and a dark mineral flavor. The wine displays pronounced acidity and a hefty saline minerality, leading to a medium-plus flavor intensity with red cherry and cranberry notes, and a spicy element on the finish. Les Fuées is considered a highlight in Barthod's range, bordering the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares and offering a similar full-spectrum complexity. 【Its ability to evolve and shed initial 'greenness' to reveal a refined, aged character is a testament to its quality and the producer's skill.】
🍴 This elegant red Burgundy, with its delicate texture and red fruit notes, pairs beautifully with lighter meats and poultry. Consider dishes like roast capon with a tart red cherry sauce, roasted pheasant, or chicken and rabbit stew. It also complements braised pork shoulder or seared tuna steak when young. As it ages, its softened structure makes it suitable for richer dishes like meats with wine-based sauces, game birds, or mushroom risotto. For a more adventurous pairing, try it with a gratin of potatoes with cepes.
🥂 The 2004 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru is perfect for a sophisticated dinner party, a special anniversary celebration, or a quiet evening by the fire. Its evolving complexity makes it an excellent choice for a tasting among connoisseurs, allowing guests to appreciate the nuances of an aged Premier Cru Burgundy. It's a wine that rewards patience and thoughtful contemplation.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is one of the most prominent producers in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation of Burgundy, known for its intense, ageworthy wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The estate was founded by Marcel Noëllat in the early 20th century. Marcel's daughter married Gaston Barthod, an officer in the French army stationed in Dijon. They developed the domaine together over the decades. After Gaston's death in 1999, their daughter Ghislaine took over, having managed the estate for the previous decade. Ghislaine and her partner Louis Boillot combine vineyard work across their respective domaines, but the estates are run separately and the wines are produced in their respective wineries.
