Sellers, Old Tawny Port, 1931
Sweet Wine
750ml
Label : Slightly Stained Damaged Label
Level : 7/8 cm
🏰 The 1931 Port vintage is often referred to as 'the vintage that never was,' due to the Great Depression and abundant unsold stocks from the 1927 vintage, which led most Port shippers to not declare it. However, a few houses, notably Quinta do Noval, defied the odds and produced wines now considered among the greatest Ports ever made. The 1931 vintage was characterized by hot and dry weather, yielding excellent, highly concentrated grapes. Well-cellared examples of 1931 Vintage Ports have evolved into wines with deep tawny-brown cores and amber rims, offering complex secondary and tertiary aromas of raisins, molasses, toffee, dried red fruits, cinnamon, and a characteristic rancio quality. The finest examples retain remarkable freshness, structure, and length even after more than nine decades.
Serving an old Tawny Port like this 1931 is a special occasion. Given its age, expect the cork and capsule to be fragile; handle with extreme care. Decanting is essential to separate any sediment that has formed over the decades. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24 hours before serving to allow sediment to settle. Carefully pour the wine into a decanter, using a light source to monitor for sediment. Serve slightly chilled, between 12-16°C (54-61°F), to best appreciate its complex aromas and flavors.
🍴 This venerable Old Tawny Port would be a magnificent accompaniment to a range of rich desserts such as crème brûlée, nut tarts, or fig pudding. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Stilton or Comté, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative digestif.
🥂 This wine is perfect for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or a quiet evening of reflection, offering a rare taste of history. 【A rare declaration from a challenging vintage】
BACKGROUND
Sellers is a traditional brand associated with Port wine. Their Old Tawny Port is aged extensively in wooden casks, allowing the wine to oxidize gently and develop complex notes of roasted nuts, caramel, and dried figs.
