🏰 The 1999 Chateau Calon-Segur is a classic Saint-Estephe Bordeaux, known for its smooth and accessible profile, with many preferring it over other wines from the same vintage. This vintage offers a delightful expression of 【ripe blue and red fruits, intertwined with notes of lead pencil, and a hint of floral elegance】. The wine showcases good concentration of dark fruit on the palate, supported by noticeable tannins that suggest further aging potential, though it is already enjoyable.
🍴 This savory and classic red Bordeaux blend, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, pairs exceptionally well with rich dishes. Consider roasted rib of beef, mushroom pie, or lamb.
🥂 Perfect for a sophisticated dinner party or a special occasion where a mature, elegant Bordeaux is desired. It's also a great choice for a vertical tasting of Calon-Segur to appreciate its evolution.
BACKGROUND
Château Calon-Ségur is an estate located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse. While Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in the wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted as well, providing blending opportunities. The grand vin is aged in new oak, fined with egg whites and produced in relatively small quantities – 80,000 bottles – every year.
