🏰The 2018 Jean Louis Chave Saint Joseph Clos Florentin is a 【singular wine from a historic vineyard】, first planted by monks in the 15th century, which Chave acquired in 2009. This Northern Rhone Syrah is celebrated for its purity and depth, with the 2018 vintage showing a more sun-kissed vibe, offering kirsch, black raspberry, spice box, and flowery aromas and flavors. Critics note its seamless balance and refined palate. While currently a bit tight and closed, it promises ample concentration and length, suggesting it will benefit from a few years of cellaring to fully relax and reveal its intriguing floral notes, plum, and raspberry fruit. The 2018 vintage in the Rhone Valley was somewhat hit or miss, but Chave's Clos Florentin stands out as a terrific example from this terroir.
🍴 This bold and structured Syrah is an ideal match for rich, savory dishes. Think roasted lamb with herbs, grilled steak, or slow-cooked beef short ribs. For a Cantonese pairing, consider braised beef brisket in clear broth or a robust char siu (barbecued pork). Its spicy and fruity notes also complement dishes with a hint of black pepper or olive.
🥂 Perfect for a special dinner party, a gathering with friends who appreciate powerful red wines, or a celebratory meal. This wine is built to age, so it's also an excellent candidate for cellaring. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and express its full aromatic complexity.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
