🏰 The 1984 E.Guigal La Mouline comes from a 【challenging and generally average Rhone vintage】, where a cool spring and summer rains made ripening difficult. However, La Mouline, being a flagship Cote Rotie from a top producer like Guigal, often transcends vintage limitations, offering a glimpse into the producer's mastery even in less-than-ideal years. While the vintage generally produced lighter, short-lived reds, a Guigal La Mouline from this era would likely still possess a core of concentration and evolving savory notes, albeit in a more delicate style than its legendary counterparts.
🍴 This mature Northern Rhone Syrah would pair well with roasted poultry, game birds, or a classic coq au vin. Its potential earthy and spicy notes could also complement a slow-cooked lamb shank or a truffle-infused pasta. For an Eastern pairing, consider a Cantonese roast pigeon or a delicate mushroom stir-fry.
🥂 Best suited for a contemplative tasting among experienced collectors, or a quiet evening appreciating the resilience of a great producer. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). Given its significant age, extreme care should be taken with the cork and capsule. Decant very gently for 30 minutes to an hour, primarily to remove any sediment. Be prepared for a wine that may show signs of age, but a well-preserved bottle can still offer a beautiful, albeit subtle, experience.
BACKGROUND
E Guigal is one of the most famous wine producers in the Rhône. The company was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis on the west bank of the Rhone, just a stone's throw from the famous sun-baked slopes of the Côte Rôtie. Guigard's flagship wines are the famous "LaLa": La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. La Landonne is 100% Syrah, from 40-year-old vines and aged in oak barrels for a similar amount of time.
