FEATURES
🏰 The 1994 vintage in Bordeaux was considered a challenging year, but Château Latour, a First Growth estate, often manages to produce impressive wines even in less favorable conditions. Les Forts de Latour is the esteemed second wine of Château Latour, crafted from younger Enclos vines and surrounding vineyards. The 1994 Les Forts de Latour is described as a very impressive second wine, with a dense purple color and a rich, moderately intense nose of sweet cassis, minerals, and vanilla. Robert Parker initially described it as "formidably tannic" and "backward" in 1996, suggesting it needed significant cellaring. After over three decades, these tannins would have softened and integrated, revealing a smoother, more resolved texture. 【 A structured and age-worthy second wine from a First Growth 】. Tasting notes highlight concentrated black currant and cassis fruit, firm tannins, mineral undertones, and touches of walnut and vanilla. It offers good depth with a sweet cherry/redcurrant finish, though less opulent than other vintages, it remains impressive. For a wine of this age, careful handling is essential. The cork may be fragile, so use a two-pronged cork puller or an Ah-So opener. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting for 30 to 60 minutes is recommended to allow the mature aromas to unfold, but monitor the wine closely. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This mature Pauillac Bordeaux blend pairs exceptionally well with classic French and refined red-meat dishes. Consider herb-crusted rack of lamb, braised short ribs, duck confit with a berry reduction, or mushroom risotto. It also complements aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. 🥂 Ideal for a special-occasion dinner, a gathering of Bordeaux enthusiasts, or as a testament to the aging potential of a well-made second wine. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of a First Growth's lineage.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Latour is one of Bordeaux's wines and the world's most famous wine producers. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Pauillac commune on the border of Saint- Julien, in the Medoc region. Typically for the region, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in the vineyard, accounting for around 80 percent of plantings. Merlot makes up most of the remainder, and there are also small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grand vin is only made from the vineyard plots surrounding the chateau and shown on the 1759 plan of the domaine. Latour makes two other wines: Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour, both of which are made from younger vines.
