E.guigal, La Mouline, 1974
Red
750ml
Label : Good Label
Level : Neck Level
Capsule : Good Capsule
🏰 The 1974 vintage in the Northern Rhône was generally considered challenging, but exceptional producers like E. Guigal often transcended vintage difficulties. La Mouline, one of Guigal's iconic 'La-La' wines from Côte-Rôtie, is renowned for its elegance and aromatic complexity, even in less heralded years. The 1974 La Mouline, now a venerable half-century old, would be a rare and fascinating experience. Expect a wine that has evolved significantly, showcasing delicate tertiary aromas of dried flowers, leather, game, and forest floor, intertwined with hints of its original dark fruit and violets. The palate would likely be ethereal, with silky tannins and a long, nuanced finish, a testament to its legendary terroir and Guigal's masterful winemaking. 【 Legendary Côte-Rôtie Terroir 】
For a wine of this venerable age, approaching five decades, expect a beautiful evolution of tertiary aromas. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged cork puller for a gentle extraction. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24-48 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is highly recommended for 30-60 minutes to allow the wine to breathe and shed any bottle-aged aromas, but be extremely mindful of its age and stop if it seems to fade or lose its delicate nuances. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This aged Côte-Rôtie would be a sublime pairing for classic French dishes like roasted squab, duck confit, or delicate game birds with truffle. For an Eastern pairing, consider slow-cooked lamb with aromatic spices or a refined mushroom and poultry consommé.
🥂 An extraordinary choice for a very special anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or a profound tasting experience with fellow connoisseurs of aged Rhône wines.
BACKGROUND
E Guigal is one of the most famous wine producers in the Rhône. The company was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis on the west bank of the Rhone, just a stone's throw from the famous sun-baked slopes of the Côte Rôtie. Guigard's flagship wines are the famous "LaLa": La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. La Landonne is 100% Syrah, from 40-year-old vines and aged in oak barrels for a similar amount of time.
