🏰 【Despite 1984 being an extremely poor vintage for Burgundy, the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru still offers intriguing complexity for the adventurous palate】. The year was plagued by a cool, wet spring, delayed flowering, and August thunderstorms, leading to diluted wines. Robert Parker noted the 1984 La Tache had an earthy, vegetal side with sweetness, but a cloying fruitiness and a diffuse personality where its components never quite meshed. However, some tasters have found pale ruby-garnet with amber tones, revealing sweet macerated cherry, dried pot-pourri, light perfume, and old soft leather. With air, it can open up to reveal subtle sweet tones, nutty oxidative notes, dried flowers, and sour plum, showcasing a delicate elegance despite its challenging origins.
🍴 This mature La Tache pairs wonderfully with classic Burgundian pairings like roast duck, goose, or other game birds. Peking duck is also a highly recommended match.
🥂 A fascinating bottle for a dedicated collector's tasting, offering a glimpse into a challenging vintage from a legendary estate. For wines of this age, expect the cork and capsule to be fragile. It's advisable to use an Ah-So opener or a Durand to minimize cork breakage. Stand the bottle upright for several days before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant carefully, if at all, just before serving to separate sediment, but be prepared for the wine to evolve rapidly in the glass. Serve at a slightly cooler cellar temperature, around 14-16°C (57-60°F), to preserve its delicate nuances.
