🏰 The 1991 Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a legendary vintage from Gerard Chave, widely considered one of the most stunning wines of his illustrious career. Even after three decades, it displays fabulous delineation and vigor. The 1991 Rhone Valley vintage was good, with a hot, dry summer. This red offers a gorgeous bouquet of 【raspberries, smoked meats, pepper, a beautiful array of spice tones, a complex base of soil, and a topnote of bonfire】. On the palate, it's pure, full-bodied, and very deep, with 【magical complexity, perfect balance, and melting tannins】, leading to a very long, seamless finish. It's at its peak maturity but still has significant aging potential.
🍴 Food Pairing: Classic pairings for Hermitage Rouge include roasted lamb, beef stew, game birds, and strong cheeses. Given its age and complexity, it would also be superb with truffle dishes or slow-cooked oxtail.
🥂 Fit for event: An extraordinary wine for a milestone celebration, a serious collector's tasting, or a very special anniversary dinner.
Serving suggestion: For a wine of this age, the cork and capsule should be inspected carefully. Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and any sediment to settle, but be mindful of its delicate nature. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
