🏰 The 1991 vintage in the Rhône Valley was generally good, with the Northern Rhône largely spared from the severe spring frosts that affected other French regions. Despite heavy September rains in the Southern Rhône, strong winds in the Northern Rhône helped mitigate rot. Côte Rôtie wines, in particular, were noted for their rich black fruit and elegant structure, with some even surpassing their 1990 counterparts. Some experts even consider 1991 the best of the 1989-90-91 trio for the Northern Rhône. This E.Guigal La Landonne 1991, from a legendary producer, is a testament to the vintage's potential. While specific tasting notes for this exact wine are scarce, 1991 Northern Rhône reds are known for rich red fruit, evolving into complex aromas of undergrowth, mushrooms, and cigars with age. This is a wine from a classic era, offering a glimpse into the past. 【Exceptional Northern Rhône 1991 vintage】
Given its venerable age, this 1991 La Landonne should be handled with utmost care. The cork may be fragile, so a two-pronged Ah-So opener or a Durand is highly recommended. Decanting for 1-2 hours can help separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but be cautious with very old wines, as they can sometimes fade quickly after prolonged air exposure. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its nuanced complexities.
🍴 This mature Northern Rhône Syrah is a magnificent match for rich, savory dishes. Think roasted game, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, beef bourguignon, or dishes featuring truffles and wild mushrooms. Its evolved character also pairs well with aged, firm cheeses.
🥂 An ideal choice for a significant anniversary, a serious wine tasting among connoisseurs, or a celebratory dinner where the wine itself is the star. It's a rare opportunity to experience a well-aged expression from a highly regarded vintage and producer.
BACKGROUND
E Guigal is one of the most famous wine producers in the Rhône. The company was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis on the west bank of the Rhone, just a stone's throw from the famous sun-baked slopes of the Côte Rôtie. Guigard's flagship wines are the famous "LaLa": La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. La Landonne is 100% Syrah, from 40-year-old vines and aged in oak barrels for a similar amount of time.
